Mathematics is defined by the dictionary as the abstract science of number, quality, and space. But what does that mean? Well, math is a tool that helps us understand the world around us. Math is everywhere. It helps us describe how long we've been on Earth (age), how much medicine we need when we're sick (prescriptions), and even influences what we find attractive/appealing (symmetry & patterns). Everything we use in our everyday life has its roots in mathematics- our phones, computers, the currency we use, all of these things exist because someone sat down and did some math.
Math can be broken up into two main groups:
- Pure Mathematics - focuses on math for its own sake, pursues the advancement of human knowledge
- Applied Mathematics - focuses on the real-world uses of mathematics such as it’s use in the fields of physics, engineering and economics to just name a few.
